Netscape has a "Netscape News" item under its "Window" menu. After you select that, to see all newsgroups on the server, you need to select the option "Show All Newsgroups" from the Options menu to see all newsgroups.
You'll indeed see a hierarchical listing of all the news groups on the news server. If a name has a little triangle next to it, it has branches; click on the triangle to see the names of the branches, which themselves may have branches.
Click on the '.' in the column next to the news group's name to "subscribe" to it; the little '.' should change to a checkmark."
Using that means, you can see, for example, all the ba.* news groups on our news server.

Include the word "ignore" in the Subject: header of any subsequent articles posted to *.test. You could also post your test articles with a Distribution: header of "local" to prevent them from leaving your local machine.
