Field Lysimeter Array

The Field Lysimeter Array is an intermediate-scale test facility for the study of microbial processes in surface and subsurface soils. This user facility occupies a 3-acre site at the Y-12 Plant (a DOE facility) on the Oak Ridge Reservation in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It consists of 20 large (10-foot-diameter) soil lysimeters, along with instrumentation for the analysis of soil, water, and microbial activity. This area has restricted access, which assures researchers that their experiments will proceed undisturbed. PNNL Flow Cell Technology

Intermediate-scale flow and transport experiments [in highly-instrumented, meter(s)-long laboratory flow cells] are a valuable tool for simulating subsurface features and conditions encountered in the field at DOE/DOD sites. ISEs offer the ability to study, under controlled laboratory conditions, complicated processes characteristic of mixed wastes and heterogeneous subsurface environments, in multiple dimensions and at different scales. ISEs may, therefore, result in major cost savings if employed prior to field studies. A distinct advantage of ISEs is that researchers can design physical and/or chemical heterogeneities in the porous media matrix that better approximate natural field conditions and therefore address research questions that contain the additional complexity of processes often encountered in the natural environment.
