Field Research Center(s)

Description:

These are special-purpose services for NABIR investigators, consisting of repositories for field-derived biotic and abiotic materials that are maintained over the life of the NABIR program.

Benefits:

Cost containment. If these services were maintained by investigators on an individual basis, they would increase overall field research costs. NABIR could save time and money by centrally managing these services, and through this centralization, act as a referral point for FRC-derived physical and biological material and as a source of materials to other (non-NABIR) investigators at cost. In addition, these services could confer benefit on other BER programs, such as the Microbial Genome program.

Goal:

To manage and provide repository-related capabilities and services that will address the diverse needs of all of the NABIR investigators.

Selection:

Existing sediment and microbial collections to be maintained. Development and maintenance of core/soil block and a set of reference sediment samples to be determined.

Examples:

  1. PNNL Sediment Collection/Repository and NABIR "Reference" Sample Sets.

  2. Subsurface Microbiology Culture Collection (SMCC). SMCC (a) now provides reference cultures (aerobic and anaerobic) for general use and (b) in time will process and distribute FRC-derived cultures as part of a SMCC-network.

  3. Core/Soil Block Collection/Repository. TBD.

  4. Reference Sediment Samples/Repository
