Berkeley Lab Goes Hollywood

In a bid to explore how public perceptions of science form and shift under the influence of mass entertainment, Berkeley Lab’s Public Affairs Department has created a free-admission double feature on February 3 and 4 entitled “Hollywood Science Meets Berkeley Lab.”

Science at the Theater, Feb. 3, 7-9 p.m. Berkeley Repertory Theatre, will examine how scientists are depicted in film, together with how science is sometimes stretched to the point of disbelief for dramatic and creative ends. Moderated by Sidney Perkowitz, author of "Hollywood Science," the Berkeley Lab film critic’s panel will consist of Richard Muller, Bill Collins and Abby Dernberg.

The following night, Feb. 4, 7-9 p.m. at the Goldman Theater, (David Brower Center) Berkeley Lab will launch a new Science Café series, featuring an informal interview of SyFy TV’s Eureka co-creator, Jaime Paglia. Science cafes are known for their welcoming attitude toward audience questions and in keeping with that tradition, there will be an hour reserved for audience-directed conversation.

Berkeley Lab is known for its team approach to science solutions—solutions that over the last 70-plus years have saved lives, generated jobs, reduced energy costs and sparked innovation.

Membership in Friends of Berkeley Lab means being able to engage directly with Lab scientists, tour the Lab itself and participate in special topic discussions. It also means being the first to hear about new discoveries, new content on our website and special programs and activities designed to broaden your understanding of science and keep you informed about the great science that defines the country's oldest national laboratory.
