BLUR Berkeley Lab Undergraduate Research

Program Description

This Berkeley Lab Program places students from 2 and 4 year institutions in paid internships in science, engineering, technical areas and public administration. Participants work with scientists,  engineers, technicians and STEM professionals on projects related to the Lab's research program.

Applications solicited annually for three separate internship terms. Internships are 10 weeks during the Summer Term (May through August) or 16 weeks during the Fall (August through December) and Spring (January through May) Terms.

BLUR Benefits

Fall / Spring

  • $500/wk (16 wks) Stipend $8,000
  • $4,800 Housing supplement
  • Travel supplement if permanent address is at least 50 miles from the Lab.


  • $500/wk (10 wks) Stipend $5,000
  • $3,000 Housing supplement
  • Travel supplement if permanent address is at least 50 miles from the Lab



  • Undergraduate students from 2 and 4 year institutions.
  • Post Baccalaureates can participate up to a year after graduation. (the time period between receipt of an undergraduate degree and starting the term is less than one year).
  • Must be 18 years or older at the time the internship begins.
  • Must be a United States Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident at the time of applying.
  • Must have an undergraduate cumulative minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all completed courses taken as a matriculated student at the applicant's current (or recently-graduated) institution and at any undergraduate institutions attended as a matriculated postsecondary student during the 5 years preceding the start of the current
  • BLUR interns can not take classes while participating in the program. Fall/Spring terms are for Post Baccalaureates (within one year of graduation at time of applying) or students taking a semester off from classes.

Selection Process

  • Typically, BLUR program participants are recommended by Laboratory scientists or faculty at partner institutions.
  • Students initially interested in participating in Berkeley Lab should apply through DOE's SULI program.


  • Complete the full ten or sixteen week program
  • Complete entrance and exit surveys
  • Submit a complete copy of a research paper and poster
  • Submit an abstract of their research in the required format
  • Attend all scheduled events including lectures, tours and group activities.
  • Complete all LBNL safety and procedural requirements
